Summary : Rotary evaporator is widely used by pilot plants and laboratories, some users may wonder how does a rotovap work? Today we let you know the rotary evaporator principle.

How does a rotovap work? Some rotovap users may ask this question. Generally a rotary evaporator is a laboratory instrument applied in chemical and biology laboratories, as well as pilot plants, for the purpose of efficient evaporation of solvents. A vacuum system, a rotating evaporation flask, a condenser with a collecting flask, these components composed of a complete rotary evaporator. How does a rotovap work? Please find the rotary evaporator principle below.

Rotary Evaporator

The rotary evaporator principle is that the boiling points of liquids reduces on decreasing their pressure, allowing solvents to be vaporized at much lower temperatures than their boiling points at normal pressure. Vacuum system is necessary to accomplish whole procedure, select a suitable vacuum pump for your rotovap will efficiently improved the evaporation efficiency. A condenser at the other end converts the gas back to liquid, which requires lowered temperatures. To achieve cooling effect, dry ice, water, or liquid nitrogen always been used. The evaporation vessel constantly rotates. This tactic aims to increase the surface area of the liquids. The centrifugal force keeps the liquid sticking to the inner surface of the vessel, exposing a larger surface area and causing faster evaporation.

A Swiss company Büchi is the inventor of rotary evaporator. But here at Henan Lanphan, you can enjoy a much cheap and high quality rotovap. Rotary evaporators are highly effective at removing the majority of organic solvents during the extraction process.

When operating a rotovap, following tips should be remembered.

To remove algae gunk from the inside of a coiled water condenser, the condenser has to be removed from the rotovap and the coil is soaked in a dilute nitric acid solution for a few hours. After carefully rinsing the insides, the rotovap is reassembled. All standard safety precautions should be followed when working with nitric acid!

If a mechanical pump is used instead of an aspirator to produce a vacuum, a secondary trap has to be used to prevent that the solvent destroys the membrane or is absorbed in the oil.

Distilled water should be used in the heating bath to minimize the scale build up in the bath which coats the thermistor and heating coils. It is very difficult to remove and reduces the efficiency of the bath. In addition, regular tap water will promote the growth of spectacularly disgusting algae colonies, particularly during the summer months. The best protocol is a regular exchange of the water.
